Where and how the pecan tree originated is not documented. There is no doubt that Native American tribes along the Mississippi River and its tributaries were using the pecan as a major food item before settlers came. The first documented reference to pecans was made by French explorers in 1704. The first documented shipment of pecans was to London in August, 1761.
Today North Carolina ranks high nationally in production of improved pecan varieties. There are approximately 1500 acres of pecans located in 45 counties. The NC pecan harvest is from around November 1 - December 31. In an average year, between 4 and 5 million pounds of in-shell pecans are produced in our state.
