N.C. beer makers to compete for N.C. State Fair ribbons

NC Brewers Cup logoRALEIGH – North Carolina’s growing craft beer industry has earned national recognition for its brews, and this fall brewers will compete to add a new honor — winner of the N.C. Brewer’s Cup at the N.C. State Fair.

The competition will name the top three commercial and home-brewed beers in 15 classes, such as light lager, Pilsner, American ale or Belgian strong ale. The N.C. Brewer’s Cup is spearheaded by members of the local beer community.

“It was natural to add the beer competition to the fair’s wide assortment of competitions when brewers came to us with the idea,” State Fair Manager Wesley Wyatt said. “The craft beer industry is growing in our state, and many breweries are sourcing local N.C. ingredients. It’s an exciting time for the industry, and we’re excited to be a part of its growth.”

The competition will be run similar to the State Fair’s wine competition and take place before the fair starts. The winning bottles will be displayed in the Commercial and Education Building during the fair’s 11-day run in October. No alcohol will be served at the fair.

Information about the competition can be found in the Premium Book on the State Fair’s website, www.ncstatefair.org, or at www.ncbrewerscup.org.
