Student winners in the NCDA&CS Farm to School calendar
art contest to be recognized Friday

WHO/WHAT: Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler will recognize and present awards to several student winners in the 2014 Farm to School calendar art contest. Students expected to attend are representing Wake, Robeson, Rowan, Mecklenberg and Mitchell counties. Thirteen winners’ work was selected out of more than 3,200 entries statewide. In addition to the artwork, the calendars include daily agricultural facts. This is the fourth year for the contest.

MORE INFO:  The contest was open to all public elementary students across the state. The winners received $50 gift cards, sponsored by the N.C. Farm to School Cooperative, the group of farmers supplying produce to the program.
The Farm to School program began in 1997 as a collaborative effort of the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Food Distribution and Marketing divisions. The initiative encourages sales of local produce in school systems across the state. Sales in schools topped $1.4 million for the 2013-2014 school year, with a record 92 of the 117 school systems statewide participating in the Farm to School Program.
