Boll Weevil Program

The boll weevil was formally eradicated from North Carolina in 1987. To insure that the boll weevil is not reintroduced to North Carolina, the NCDA&CS administers a survey trapping program in association with the Southeastern Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation,Inc. All cotton fields in the state greater than 20 acres are trapped with a minimum of two traps. Fields less than 20 acres require a single trap .

Cotton acreage for 2007 was 498,530 acres. Cotton was grown in 55 counties. There were 21,837 traps placed and maintained on 18,316 cotton fields.
