DuPont State Recreational Forest (DSRF) Annual Legislative Reports
DSRF has continually grown in popularity. Currently more than a million people visit DSRF each year, and this level of visitation is expected to continue to grow.
Nearly 180,000 people visited DSRF in July 2021– making it the most popular month for visitors that year. Only November, December, January and February saw fewer than 100,000 visitors.
While DSRF personnel are excited that people from around the world like to visit, rangers spend time reminding visitors about and enforcing forest rules. The most common problem addressed is disorderly conduct, which includes issues like climbing on waterfalls, conflicts between trail users, and venturing into no trespassing areas.
DSRF strives to provide an exemplary model of scientifically sound, ecologically based natural resource management for the social and economic benefits of a diverse community of users. These active management tools include planting trees, thinning trees, removing invasive plants, prescribed burns and timber harvests.
Select portions of DSRF are classified as game lands and are open to hunters with both a valid hunting license and a DSRF-specific hunting permit – both of which are issued by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC). In addition, the NCWRC maintains several food plots for wildlife within the boundaries of DSRF.
