There are currently 462 species on the NC Protected Plant List each with a designation of Endangered, Threatened, Special Concern-Vulnerable, or Special Concern-Historical. Protected Plant Species are those for which there is sufficient recorded information about the number of viable populations in the state, their overall short-term trend, and the severity, scope, and immediacity of the top three threats. Additional information on rare plant species in North Carolina can be obtained in the rare plant list updated every two years by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program. Contact the North Carolina Natural Hertiage Program to recieve a copy of this list. This list includes the species on the Protected Plant List, but also hundreds of other species uncommon enough to be tracked, but not rare or threatened enough to be legally protected.
